Investigating English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Studens' Reading Motivation Through The Use Of Reading Logs
This qualitative study explores EFL students’ reading motivation experiences through the use of reading logs in an extensive reading course. Using a narrative inquiry approach, data were collected from two students through semi-structured interviews and reading log documents, and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that reading motivation emerged through intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions as well as challenges followed by self-reflection. Intrinsic motivation was shaped by autonomy in text selection, a sense of competence from monitoring reading progress, and relatedness supported by the learning environment. Extrinsic motivation was influenced by academic expectations and lecturer feedback. In addition, reading challenges encouraged reflective practices that helped students regulate reading choices and sustain motivation. The study highlights reading logs as a reflective tool that supports EFL students’ reading motivation experiences.
