Students' Difficulties In Public Speaking Class:A Narrative Inquiry
Public speaking is one of the most important speaking skills to have, including for students. However, students often find it difficult to do public speaking, even though they are in a public speaking class. Public speaking class is a class created specifically to train students' public speaking skills. This research uses a qualitative approach and narrative inquiry as methods. The participants of this research were two students majoring in English. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. This study theoretically contributes to the theories of Chen, Penny Ur, Bygate, and supports theories related to students' difficulties in speaking. This research aims to determine the difficulties faced by students in speaking in public speaking class. The results of this research show that students have difficulties in public speaking class and include preparation before performing in front of the class. Students feel confused about deciding what material to convey because they are used to working in groups but have to work individually in public speaking class. Students also feel anxious when they want to present material about something new. Besides, students found the difficulties in speaking when performing in front of the class, namely nervousness, anxiety, difficulty in choosing vocabulary, and lack of fluency in speaking.
