Investigating efl students’ speaking anxiety In the classroom: some factors and strategies
Speaking is one of the skills required by English Foreign Language Learners. However, students often feel anxiety in English-speaking learning. Anxiety is a problem that must be solved in the classroom. This research focuses on investigating what factors are faced by students in English speaking and how they overcome it. The researcher conducted at a Modern Islamic Boarding School in Brebes, with four students as participants in the 11th grade. This study designed in qualitative research, then for obtaining data used semi-structured interviews and observation. The investigation requires to determine what factors and how students reduce speaking anxiety. The result of this research found seven factors that influenced students’ speaking anxiety: low English proficiency, low motivation, lack of familiarity of task, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, syhness, and incomprehensible inputs. The researcher also drew strategies that used students to overcome speaking anixety: preparation, peer to peer seeking, positive thinking, bringing small note, making jokes, avoid eyes contact and the last relaxation. As a whole, these findings will help English language learners overcome their fear of public speaking.
