Exploring young learners' experiences of practicing english speaking skills through short stories with moral
Second-language or foreign language learners prioritize mastery of English speaking skills. But in reality, many learners still find it difficult to speak English, even for simple words. One method that can be considered in learning English speaking skill is by using moral short stories. Short stories give students the chance to order the sequence of events, make use of the terminology included in the story, and also increase their understanding of the outside world. Based on the explanation above, this research discussed the role of short stories with morals in helping junior high school students learn and practice English speaking skills. This qualitative research was conducted in a public junior high school in Pekalongan, Indonesia. The researcher used observation and interview to get the data. The results show that the use of short stories with moral help students to learn five skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. From the findings of this study, it shows that the students improved in all skills after learning speaking by using short stories with morals. In addition, the process of learning speaking by using short stories with moral helps students develop their speaking skills, motivate students to acquire a positive personality, increase students' confidence to speak in public, optimize students' oral expression of thoughts or feelings, and make students' active in practicing speaking.
