Code-Switching Used by EFL Students During Microteaching Class
In the language learning, EFL students in microteaching classes often code-switch, Indonesian-English or Indonesian-English, when explaining learning materials. This study aims to identify different types of code-switching and explore why students use code-switching when teaching in microteaching classes. The researcher used qualitative approach and narrative inquiry as the research design. In this case, data was collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. This research will help develop Poplack and Hoffman theory when EFL students use code-switching in teaching practice in microteaching classes. The findings of this study show that the types of code switching used are intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. There are several reasons why students code switch namely quoting somebody else, interjection, repetition used for clarification, the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, the weakness English proficiency, language stagnation, the relationship between the speaker and listener, language fatigue and situation of the class.
