Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) to Help Students Learn Vocabulary: A Case Study of Senior High School Students
With the development of technology, second language learners can enhance their English vocabulary outside the classroom with a new pedagogical approach i.e. Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE). This research aims to describe how students learn English vocabulary through IDLE and to what extent IDLE can influence students’ English vocabulary. Two high school students in Central Java, Indonesia participated in this study. Data was collected through interviews using a narrative approach. For analyzing the data, researchers used thematic analysis. Research result shows that students acquired English vocabulary through Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) using YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Duolingo. Meanwhile, Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) also influences students' English vocabulary. IDLE can help students' receptive vocabulary grow. On the contrary, IDLE does not influence students' productive English vocabulary.
