Teaching English Animal Vocabulary to Elementary School Students With Modified Popular Songs
Songs have an important role in the development of children learning a second learning. It also can be considered a valuable pedagogical tool particularly to help learners improve vocabulary mastery. This study aimed to see the implementation and the benefits of teaching English animal vocabulary using a modified popular song for elementary school students at the Bimbim Barakallah tutoring center. The research employed qualitative method, through case study. In this study, the researcher takes the data from observation, and from documentation. This research was conducted at the tutoring center "Bimbim Barakaallah" in Jrakahpayung, Batang. The majority of tutoring members are second graders at SDN Jrakahpayung. This study includes ten children as participants. This study used 3 children’s popular songs to modify: Cicak-cicak di Dinding, Kring-kring Sepeda Baru, and Abang Tukang Bakso. The results showed that the implementation of teaching animal English vocabulary using modified popular songs was carried out in three activities: pre-activity (warming up), main activity (presenting), and closing activity (reflecting). The results of the study also show that there are five benefits of teaching English animal vocabulary using modified popular songs, namely as follows: modified popular songs can, 1. help convey better vocabulary to students, 2. make it easy for students to memorize new vocabulary, 3. add new students' vocabulary easily, 4. encourage students to listen, and 5. encourage students to feel more interested and engaged in English classes. Finally, the use of a modified popular song as a medium for teaching English animal vocabulary can help students increase their vocabulary, remember new vocabulary easily, and memorize it quickly.
