Several researchers have discussed the issue of reading narrative text. Little research focuses on
reading narrative critically situated in the higher education context. To address this gap, the study
aims to explore students’ perception of narrative in critical reading course. Designed in narrative
inquiry, the data were collected through semi-structured interview. Four participants were
volunteered to participate in this research. The data were analyzed by employing thematic
analysis. Study findings reveal that first the students used the previewing was to predict the text in
finding the orientation in a story and the other two students used contextualizing contained
historical or cultural background to find the orientation in a story. Second, the students used the

students used the annotating mean underlining the important words to find the complication in a
story. Last, the students used their interpretation by drawing the conclusion in their minds to find
the resolution in a story. The other student used the evaluating the text mean find out the fact and
opinion cause in analyzing the resolution of story. The other student used monitoring
