Factors Contributing to Student's Difficulties in Writing English Essays
Essay writing is one of the writing skills that must be mastered by sudents because they often get an assignment to write an essay, especially college students. However, many students find it difficult when they asked to compose an essay. This research aimed to investigate the difficulties in English essay writing and its factors. This research used a qualitative approach
with a narrative inquiry as a research design. The participants involved 33 students and one lecturer. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. To find meaning in the data, data were analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The result of the study revealed that (1) students find difficulty in grammar, vocabulary, cohesion and coherence, and developing topic ideas, (2) the factors that contribute to students’ difficulties are both internal factors (psychological factors and linguistic factors) and external factors (peer support and advisor support), (3) several ways that students do to overcome the difficulties in writing essays were by motivate themselves, study a lot, read a lot, and practice. In addition, they were also asked their friends and their lecturer to get more explanation. To make a good essay, students need to improve their grammar and punctuation ability. Then, they need to increase their logical thinking ability to create coherent and cohesive essays.
