Social Media and Crisis Communication
How to effectively engage with publics via both traditional and social media in different types of crises with different forms of communication channels has been a critical question for both media professionals and communication scholars. Crisis communicators facing high- stakes threats have an increasing need for evidencebased guidelines for crisis information to ensure the safety and welfare of publics and organizations and aid in crisis recovery. Scarce theory- grounded research explores how publics receive, seek, and share crisis information via social media.
Media plays an essential role in crisis communication. Crisis information production and dissemination are critical for crisis preparedness, crisis response, and crisis recovery, as many have witnessed, from man- made disasters, such as the Boston Marathon bombings and the recent Paris terrorist attacks, to corporate crises that endanger societal well- being, such as the BP oil spill. Although media professionals and communication scholars recognize the importance of engaging
publics via different forms of media, how to effectively engage with publics via both traditional and social media has been a struggle.
