Handbook of Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities Assessment
The history of childhood assessment is of fairly recent origin. The beginnings can be traced to the
development of intelligence testing. Most notable was the work of Binet in Paris. The goal of the
Binet-Simon Intelligence Test was to ascertain which children had major deficits in cognitive
development. This information was used to place children with marked cognitive deficits in separate classes. Building on this work, Terman developed the Stanford-Binet intelligence test in California. With these developments, the new field of formal childhood assessment quickly emerged.
